Nagpur Division's Reservoirs Witness Second-Highest Water Storage in Maharashtra Despite Rainfall Deficit
Despite facing a rainfall deficit in the initial weeks of the monsoon season, the reservoirs in Nagpur division have managed to achieve an impressive water storage of 49.08 per cent, making it the second-highest in the entire state of Maharashtra, with Konkan division topping the list at 56.65 per cent.
While the entire state has experienced significant rainfall deficit, the Konkan region has been an exception, witnessing excess rainfall in some areas, leading to its impressive water stock levels.
Nagpur division received scattered rainfall initially, resulting in comparatively lesser water storage in dams than the Konkan region. However, the rainfall intensity has increased with the onset of the third week of July, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecast for widespread rainfall across the division and Vidarbha for the next seven days is expected to further increase water stock in all dams of the region.
Currently, Nagpur division's dams hold 2,261.03 million cubic meters of live water storage, owing to heavy rainfall in neighboring Madhya Pradesh. The Gosikhurd National Project's catchment area received good rains, leading to an increase in water level, prompting the opening of 29 gates out of 33 with total water discharge of 3299.22 mmg per second. However, due to reduced water levels in the evening, four gates were closed by the administration.
The Totladoh dam, a major source of water for Nagpur district, currently holds 705.40 Mcum live water stock, which is 69.37 per cent of its total storage. Though slightly lower than last year's level, it still provides a significant relief to the region.
Overall, the dams in Nagpur Division, consisting of 383 structures, hold 2,261.03 million cubic meters of water on July 17, showcasing a commendable performance despite the challenging rainfall conditions. With the prediction of continued good monsoon rains in the coming days, farmers and administration are hopeful for the water situation to improve further.
