Nagpur Doctors Join Nationwide Protest Over Kolkata Doctor's Murder
Nagpur, India: Doctors from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), AIIMS, and the Ayurvedic College in Nagpur have joined the nationwide protest called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). This protest follows the shocking rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, which has sparked outrage and protests across India.
In Nagpur, doctors will organize a candle march on Friday evening, starting from Samvidhan Square. The march aims to show solidarity with the victim and demand justice, drawing participation from a large number of medical professionals. This event underscores the growing anger and concern within the medical community over the rising incidents of violence against healthcare workers.
The IMA has announced a nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine from 6 am on Saturday, August 17, to 6 am on Sunday. While essential services like emergency care will continue, routine outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries will be suspended during this period. The IMA stated that this protest is intended to raise awareness about the increasing violence and crimes targeting doctors.
The candle march and service withdrawal in Nagpur are part of the larger nationwide movement initiated by the IMA, which is gaining widespread support from the medical community across the country.
