Nagpur Experiences Tremors for Third Consecutive Day
Nagpur district felt tremors of 2.7 magnitude for the third day in a row on Sunday afternoon, sparking panic among residents. The tremor struck around 2.28 pm near the Khapri area, just a few kilometres from Nagpur.
Seismic activity has been occurring in and around Nagpur district since March this year. The initial event, a 2.7 magnitude tremor, occurred on March 10. Subsequently, on March 26, the district experienced three consecutive quakes of 2.8 magnitude each. Tremors were also felt in the Hingoli, Wardha, and Akola districts during these occurrences, raising concerns among experts about the three recent earthquakes in the Nagpur district.
Despite public concern, authorities have yet to issue any advisories regarding the ongoing seismic events. Retired geologists and experts are now calling for studies by the National Centre for Seismology and Geological Survey of India in Nagpur district to understand these occurrences better. Opinions among experts vary, with some attributing the events to mining activities, while others speculate about the reactivation of deep-seated faults in the region.
These areas are classified as Zone II, indicating a low likelihood of seismic activity, according to the Bureau of Indian Standards' seismic zonation map of India. However, experts point to similar seismic activity in the Palghar district (Zone III) between 2018 and 2020, suggesting the need for further study in the Nagpur district due to its geological similarities.
Factors such as alternating rainfall in hot weather, groundwater percolation through cracks, fissures in the strata, and pore pressure development are proposed explanations for the recent seismic activity in Nagpur district. Further research is deemed necessary to understand and potentially mitigate the risk of such occurrences.
