Nagpur Fire Department Closes Meditrina Hospital Over Safety Violation

Nagpur, India: The Fire Department of Nagpur declared Meditrina Hospital in Ramdaspeth unsafe on February 18, 2025, because it didn't have the required fire safety certificate and lacked important fire safety systems. Even though the hospital had enough time to fix these issues, it didn’t make the necessary changes, so the building was ordered to be evacuated immediately.
On February 12, 2025, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Health Department warned that Meditrina Hospital's registration would be canceled if it didn't obtain the Fire Compliance Certificate within a month.
On February 18, 2025, the Fire Department sent a letter to M/s VRG Healthcare Private Limited (Meditrina Hospital), stating that the hospital was very unsafe and ordered everyone to leave, which resulted in the hospital being closed.
On January 1, 2025, Vikas Thakre, MLA from West Nagpur and President of Nagpur District (City) Congress Committee, filed a complaint with the NMC about the hospital's lack of fire safety measures and other violations. After taking the complaint seriously, the Fire Department issued a notice to the hospital on January 9, 2025, giving it one month to install fire safety systems. Since the hospital did not follow the instructions, it was declared unsafe, and an evacuation order was given.
The Fire Department's report states that the hospital lacks 29 different fire safety measures. There are also unauthorized constructions, including an oxygen plant, that block fire tenders from reaching the back and sides of the building. Moreover, a kitchen and storeroom have been built on the terrace, and the basement parking area is being used to store generators and other equipment.
In response to these issues, Vikas Thakre lodged a complaint against NMC officials with Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, which resulted in a meeting on February 12, 2025, to discuss and resolve the matter.
Thakre had previously called for the cancellation of the hospital's registration on December 23, 2020. The hospital's director, Dr. Sameer Paltewar, has several FIRs against him, including a fraud case worth Rs 3 crore filed on January 22, 2019, related to the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. There are also other cases related to billing mistakes and financial issues, filed on January 20, 2021, and February 20, 2021.
Additionally, on December 14, 2024, an FIR was filed for blocking access to the hospital by locking its doors, which stopped patients and other directors from entering.
