Nagpur Hits Hottest Day of Season at 44.7°C, Relief Nowhere in Sight

Nagpur, India: The summer heat has intensified in Nagpur, with Saturday marking the hottest day of the season at a scorching 44.7°C. While temperatures dipped slightly on Sunday to 44°C, the oppressive heat showed no signs of easing, leaving residents struggling under the sweltering conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that Nagpur will experience even hotter temperatures, reaching up to 45°C on April 21 and 22, triggering a heatwave alert for the city. For the rest of April, the mercury is expected to remain around 44°C, offering little respite from the heat.

According to the IMD, scattered clouds may appear over Vidarbha, including Nagpur, but they are unlikely to have any cooling effect. A cyclonic circulation has developed over Bangladesh, Assam, and Pakistan, but weather experts believe it will not influence conditions in Central India. Additionally, a trough stretching from North-South Vidarbha to Tamil Nadu has formed, but it too is not expected to provide any relief from the heatwave.

On Sunday, the sun’s harsh rays began beating down on the city from early morning. Due to the public holiday and the intense heat, the streets were unusually quiet, with many residents opting to stay indoors during the afternoon. The air remained dry throughout the day, with morning humidity at 29%, which dropped to 23% by evening, making the heat even more unbearable.

Several other districts in Vidarbha also recorded extremely high temperatures, with Chandrapur being the hottest at 44.6°C. Other areas like Amravati and Brahmapuri recorded 44.4°C, Akola saw 44.3°C, and Nagpur-Wardha reached 44°C. Buldhana recorded the lowest temperature in the region at 39.6°C.

As the heatwave continues to grip the region, health officials are advising residents to take extra precautions. With heatwave conditions expected to persist until April 23, people are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, keep hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities to minimise the risk of heat-related illnesses.
