Nagpur Man Jailed for Nearly 6 Years Over ₹18.6 Lakh Alimony Default

Vadodara, India: A 40-year-old man from Nagpur has been sentenced to 2,220 days (almost six years) in jail by a family court in Vadodara for not paying ₹18.60 lakh in maintenance to his estranged wife.
The man was arrested by Maharashtra Police and brought to court after ignoring repeated summons and warrants since 2017. The court had earlier ordered him to pay ₹15,000 per month to his wife and ₹10,000 for their daughter, now 11 years old. But he failed to make any payments.
The couple got married in 2012 and separated in 2014. The wife, who lives with her family in Vadodara, filed several cases to recover the unpaid amount. The family court heard three of those cases recently and announced the punishment on Wednesday.
According to her lawyer, Mahendra Parmar, the man runs a successful sweet shop in Nagpur but had been avoiding court appearances. He was sentenced as follows:
-
1,230 days in jail for unpaid dues of ₹10.30 lakh
-
360 days for ₹3 lakh
-
630 days for ₹5.30 lakh
He can avoid serving the full sentence if he pays the complete amount of ₹18.60 lakh.
In total, the man owes nearly ₹33 lakh in maintenance, which could lead to a total jail term of around nine years if not paid.
The court also criticised Nagpur police for not acting on the earlier warrants. On March 29, it ordered that an FIR be filed against senior officers, including the Superintendent of Police, Deputy SP, and the Police Inspector of Umred station, for failing to follow court directions.
Police in Vadodara are now waiting for the court’s order to file the FIR against these officials. The case continues to be under investigation.
