Nagpur North Voters Reject Independent Candidate and NOTA in 2024 Election
Nagpur, India: In the Nagpur North Assembly constituency, where 26 candidates contested, voters largely rejected independent candidates. Of the 26 contenders, 21 did not even secure 1,000 votes.
The Nagpur North Assembly constituency has 4,28,845 registered voters, with 2,50,632 casting their votes 2,48,948 through EVMs and 1,684 via postal ballots. Dr. Nitin Raut of the Congress won by a substantial margin of 28,467 votes, securing 1,27,877 votes. His opponent, Dr. Milind Mane of the BJP, received 99,410 votes, bringing the combined total for the two main candidates to 2,27,287 votes.
BSP’s Manoj Sangole placed third with 12,487 votes, followed by AIMIM’s Kirti Dongre, who received 3,819 votes. Muralidhar Meshram of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) secured 1,229 votes.
None of the 21 independent candidates crossed the 1,000 vote mark. Atul Kumar Khobragade received the highest share with 928 votes, followed by Athang Karode with 901 votes. Nineteen independents received fewer than 350 votes, and 10 of them received under 150 votes. In total, these 21 candidates gathered just 4,822 votes.
In addition to the weak performance of independent candidates, the None of the Above (NOTA) option also received minimal support, with only 988 voters choosing it.
This indicates a clear rejection by Nagpur North voters of both independent candidates and the NOTA option in this election.
