Nagpur Police Constable Dies by Suicide, Third Case

Nagpur: A 49-year-old police constable, Hemraj Dyaneshwar Jichkar, was found hanging at his residence in Gittikhadan on Friday afternoon. He was attached to Wadi Police Station and reportedly took the extreme step due to financial stress, according to police sources.

Constable’s Children Discovered the Tragic Incident

Jichkar was on leave when the incident took place. His wife was attending a wedding, and his two sons, Manthan (12) and Navin (10), were at school. When they returned home around 3 PM, they found the door locked from inside. After knocking repeatedly with no response, they looked through a window and saw their father hanging from the ceiling with a dupatta.

Their cries alerted neighbors, who broke open the door and brought him down, but he had already passed away. Gittikhadan Police arrived at the scene, conducted an inspection, and sent the body for post-mortem. Jichkar, whose father was also in the police force, was working as a Beat Marshal at Wadi Police Station.

Third Police Suicide in Nagpur Raises Mental Health Concerns

Jichkar’s suicide marks the third case among Nagpur police personnel in recent weeks, raising concerns over mental health and financial stress in the force:

  • A GRP constable was found hanging in a forest.
  • An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) consumed poison outside an EVM strongroom.
  • An SRPF constable on sentry duty at the Nagpur Rural SP’s residence attempted suicide.

The rising cases have sparked discussions on the urgent need for mental health support, stress management programs, and financial assistance for police personnel. Authorities are now considering stronger counseling and intervention measures to prevent further tragedies.
