Nagpur Police Crack Down on Prank Callers to Emergency Helpline 112

The Nagpur police have taken assertive action against individuals engaging in prank calls to the emergency helpline number 112. Over the past four months, the police have registered cases against six people who have misused the helpline by making unnecessary and foolish calls.
The helpline number 112, operational in every district, has gained significant popularity as a reliable means for seeking help during emergencies, particularly among women in distress. Between January and April 2023, an astounding 5,402 women made calls to 112, and the police promptly provided them with the necessary assistance and protection.
Notably, senior citizens have also utilized the 112 services in substantial numbers. During the same period, a total of 909 senior citizens sought help by dialling the helpline, and the police swiftly responded by reaching the scene to assist.
However, the misuse of this vital service has become a growing concern. Making prank calls to 112 is a punishable offence as it interferes with the proper functioning of the emergency response system. Individuals who maliciously provide false information can also face legal consequences.
The Nagpur police have appealed to the public to be aware of the repercussions of making prank calls and to use the helpline responsibly. When dialling 112, individuals can expect a response from the police within 10 minutes, ensuring timely assistance for those in need.
To facilitate the smooth operation of the helpline service, Nagpur city has deployed 108 police vehicles around the clock. This ensures a swift and efficient response to distress calls received through the 112 helpline.
The public must understand that the helpline number 112 is meant for genuine emergencies and not for frivolous or prank calls. By ensuring the proper use of this essential service, individuals can help maintain the safety and security of the community
