Nagpur Police Identify and Address 330 Black Spots to Prevent Crimes
In response to the October rape incident involving a college girl, Nagpur police have taken active measures to address isolated road stretches in the city. Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, revealed during the Legislative Assembly's Question Hour that 330 isolated 'black spots' have been identified for targeted interventions, such as improving lighting conditions and installing CCTV cameras.
The inquiry was raised by Mohan Mate, the MLA for South Nagpur, who sought updates on the October incident involving the rape of a 19-year-old college girl near Wardha Road under the jurisdiction of Hingna police station. Mate also inquired about measures being implemented to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
In a written response, Fadnavis informed the Legislative Assembly that a case was registered at Hingna police station on October 5, resulting in the arrest of the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. To forestall similar incidents, Nagpur has identified 330 isolated hotspots, with planned initiatives including improved lighting, CCTV installation, and the deployment of security personnel.
Fadnavis noted that the police administration has issued directives to concerned officials, emphasizing the role of Damini Squads in patrolling isolated spots for women's safety. Additionally, these squads engage in awareness campaigns at schools, colleges, hostels, and slum areas. The initiative extends to 'Police Didi' visiting educational institutions and public spaces, conducting meetings with women and vigilance committees, and providing guidance on issues related to women's safety and crimes against women.
