Nagpur Police Officer Rescues Woman and Child,Wins Jeevan Raksha Medal
Nagpur: In the middle of heavy rain that flooded Nagpur, a brave police officer saved a woman and her young son. Senior Police Inspector Dnyaneshwar Bhedodkar, posted at Hudkeshwar Police Station, was honored with the Jeevan Raksha Medal by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Republic Day 2025 for his heroic efforts.
On the night of September 22, 2024, Nagpur was hit by relentless rain, leaving many streets waterlogged and cutting off electricity in several areas. In the Dhantoli area near Janaki Talkies, 42-year-old Sunita Tiwari and her son were trapped in their flooded home. The water had risen dangerously to her neck. Panicked, Sunita called the police control room for help.
Senior Inspector Bhedodkar, who had just finished his night shift, was passing through Dhantoli when he heard the distress call. Though off duty, he didn’t hesitate to respond.
When he arrived, he found the area submerged, with strong water currents making rescue nearly impossible. Without waiting for backup, Bhedodkar took a rope from his police vehicle and entered the flooded house, navigating through darkness and rising water. Using the rope and his police belt, he safely pulled the mother and child to higher ground.
Witnesses called him a “guardian angel” for risking his own life to save others.
On Republic Day, Bhedodkar was recognized for his courage with the prestigious Jeevan Raksha Medal, an honor for those who risk their lives to save others. His actions reflect the police motto, “Sadrakshanaya Khalanigrahanaya”—to protect the good and punish the wicked.
Inspector Bhedodkar’s bravery has inspired many, showing that true heroes live among us, ready to act in the face of danger.
