Nagpur Police Starts "No Right Turn" on Wardha Road from Today
Nagpur, India: The City Traffic Police have announced a No-right turn on Wardha Road to reduce traffic congestion. This has been enforced from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM (Monday to Saturday).
Vehicles travelling along the Morris College T-point to Ajni Square road stretch will be prohibited from making right turns, while left turns will still be allowed at Rahate Colony T-point and Kriplani Square. U-turns will be available near the Central Jail gate. A notification from the Traffic Police explained that an experimental run of this system from September 23 to 28 showed positive results.
According to the notification, vehicles from Ajni Square and Morris College T-point will only be allowed to make left turns at Rahate Square and Kriplani Square. Traffic moving from Deekshabhoomi Square to Kriplani Square will also be restricted. Residents near the Deekshabhoomi-Kriplani Square area will still be able to make a left turn from Ajni Square and proceed to their homes via Deekshabhoomi Road, where they can make a U-turn. Additionally, only left turns will be permitted at Congress Nagar Square, while right turns will be prohibited.
Police officers will maintain their positions during peak traffic times. Previously, the area between Rahate T-point and Ajni Square was notorious for evening rush hour jams, with two traffic signals at Rahate Colony Square and Kriplani Square causing frequent bottlenecks. Commuters often had to wait through multiple green lights to move just a short distance.
To tackle this issue, the Traffic Police temporarily banned right turns at these intersections during peak hours. About 80% of traffic along this route travels straight, while only 20% of vehicles need to make right turns or U-turns. The adjustments have allowed vehicles to reach Morris College T-point and Ajni Square faster, and signal timings have been extended by 10 seconds to improve traffic flow during peak hours.
Though the new system has significantly improved traffic conditions, some drivers have faced difficulties due to the ban on right turns. However, the number of affected drivers remains small compared to the majority who benefit from smoother traffic flow. For those traveling toward Deekshabhoomi from Kriplani Square, U-turns can now be made just 200 meters ahead, in front of the Central Jail, a police officer confirmed.
