Nagpur Shivers as Temperature Drops to 8.8°C, Fourth Coldest Day of Winter
Nagpur, India: Nagpur experienced a sudden chill on Thursday as the minimum temperature dropped to 8.8 degrees Celsius, marking a significant 5.5-degree fall from the previous day. This was the fourth coldest day of the winter season for the city, prompting residents to bundle up in sweaters and jackets.
The dip in temperature was attributed to a change in wind patterns and clear skies, which helped bring the mercury down to single digits after nearly ten days. Northerly winds added to the winter chill, which became noticeable from Wednesday evening. Relative humidity was recorded at 53%, further intensifying the cold.
Neighboring Gondia reported a minimum temperature of 9.8 degrees Celsius, making it the second coldest place in Vidarbha after Nagpur. Other places in the region also experienced low temperatures:
- Bhandara: 10.0°C
- Brahmapuri: 11.3°C
- Wardha: 11.4°C
- Gadchiroli: 12.4°C
- Amravati: 12.4°C
- Akola: 14.6°C
- Buldhana: 14.8°C
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted further drops in the minimum temperature across Vidarbha in the coming days. However, the day temperatures remained steady, with Nagpur recording a maximum of 30.4°C, which is 2.6 degrees above normal.
IMD explained that for a cold wave to be declared, the minimum temperature must be 4.5°C to 6.4°C below normal for more than two days. The lowest temperature in Nagpur this winter was 7.0°C, recorded on December 15, 2024.
- Lowest Maximum Temperature: Bhandara at 28.2°C
- Highest Maximum Temperature: Akola at 32.8°C
- Other cities like Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli recorded maximum temperatures below 30°C.
As winter tightens its grip on the region, residents are bracing for colder days ahead.
