Nagpur Struggles with Frequent Power Cuts Amid Unbearable Heat

Nagpur, India: Residents across Nagpur are facing constant power cuts, making life difficult during the extreme summer heat. Whether it’s Sitabuldi, Amravati Road, Wathoda, or the areas near GMCH, no part of the city has been spared from these disruptions.

Power supply is going off without warning at any time of day. As the demand for electricity rises with the soaring temperatures, people are left without fans, coolers, or air conditioners when they need them the most. Meanwhile, the electricity board, MSEDCL, is blaming the changing weather and trying to avoid responsibility.

In the past few days, the power situation has worsened. On Wednesday, many areas had no electricity due to planned maintenance. Later in the evening, strong winds and rain caused more blackouts. On Tuesday night, the entire stretch from Wanjari Nagar to Ajni railway station went dark. The Isasani feeder also failed, and power was restored only after 10 hours by rerouting supply from the Rajiv Nagar feeder.

On April 5, Ayurvedic Layout had no power for 90 minutes in the evening. Hingna also faced a 2-hour outage the same day. On April 6, the Dadinge Layout feeder was down for several hours.

Why So Many Breakdowns?

The rising heat has pushed up electricity demand by about 50 megawatts. This is putting extra load on transformers, which are overheating and failing.

Other reasons include:

  • Damaged insulators: Kites flown during Makar Sankranti damage insulators, and light rains make the problem worse.

  • Flying plastic: Pieces of plastic in the air are getting stuck on power lines, leading to faults and breakdowns.

Citizens are upset with the poor power supply and are asking for quick repairs and better maintenance to avoid more trouble in the hot summer days ahead.
