Nagpur to Get 'India Gate'-Inspired Memorial at Empress Mill

Nagpur, India: The city will soon have its own version of Delhi’s India Gate, as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has approved a grand memorial project at the Empress Mill compound. The ‘Vande Mataram’ memorial will be constructed inside the Vande Mataram Garden, spread across one lakh square feet, at an estimated cost of ₹4.58 crore.

Inspired by the iconic India Gate, the memorial will honour the bravery and sacrifice of Indian freedom fighters and soldiers. The main feature will be a 50-foot tall replica of India Gate, made from sandstone and granite. The words ‘Vande Mataram’ will be engraved on the top, with names of martyrs from Maharashtra etched on the inner walls.

An eternal flame, similar to the Amar Jawan Jyoti in Delhi, will be placed under the arch to pay tribute to fallen soldiers. The memorial will also include statues of freedom fighters and soldiers, portraying India’s journey to independence and its continuing courage.

As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, marking 75 years of Independence, the memorial and garden will be dedicated to martyrs, war widows, ex-servicemen, and their families.

The project was originally proposed by former Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari, who discussed the idea with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The proposal received positive support from the minister, as well as from former NMC Commissioner Radhakrishna B and ex-MP Ajay Sancheti.

The upcoming memorial is expected to become a proud and symbolic landmark for Nagpur, celebrating the nation’s heroes.
