Nagpur: Traffic Jams Persist at Manish Nagar-Besa Stretch Due to Construction
Nagpur, India: Motorists travelling between Manish Nagar, Besa, Beltarodi, and nearby areas are facing daily traffic jams caused by roadwork on a 50-meter stretch between Manish Nagar T-point and Besa T-point. Despite the deployment of five traffic personnel, congestion remains a persistent issue.
The traffic snarls began when the Public Works Department (PWD) started concreting the road between Manish Nagar T-point and Besa T-point (Dr BR Ambedkar Square). While one side of the road has been concretized, the remaining stretch has been scraped, reducing its width. Commuters have expressed frustration over the lack of planning before starting the project.
"Traffic on this road was already heavy, and now the narrowing has made it worse," said Pritesh Shahu, a daily commuter.
Choked T-Point
Manish Nagar T-point has always struggled with congestion due to its narrow design and high traffic from areas like Manewada, Beltarodi, and Besa. With no alternate routes available, motorists are forced to navigate the bottleneck.
PWD officials have announced that one-way traffic on the concretized section will be allowed within 8-10 days. After this, work will commence on the remaining sections. "We plan to open two-way traffic on completed patches before moving to other parts of the road," said a PWD representative.
Ajni Zone Traffic PI Ritesh Aher noted that five traffic officers are managing the situation and that discussions with PWD and contractors are ongoing to expedite the project. He also mentioned plans to install paver blocks at both T-points to improve traffic flow.
Illegal hawkers and encroachments along the stretch between the Manish Nagar underpass and T-point have worsened the situation. Stalls set up in the evenings attract visitors who park their vehicles carelessly, further clogging the narrow road. Despite the chaos, civic authorities have yet to take action.
Widening Projects in Progress
The road from Dr. BR Ambedkar Square to Besa Square is being widened, but work has started only on one side. The stretch from Dr. BR Ambedkar Square to Beltarodi police station also remains in poor condition. PWD officials have stated that tenders for these projects have been issued, and work will begin soon.
