Nation Awaits January 18 Verdict in RG Kar Rape-Murder Case; Will Sanjay Roy Get Death Sentence?
Nagpur, India: The Sealdah Court will deliver its verdict on Saturday in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. The incident, which happened on August 9, 2024, shocked the nation when a 31-year-old junior doctor was found raped and murdered in the seminar room of the Kolkata-based hospital.
The victim’s father expressed his determination to get justice, saying, “We will fight for as long as it takes. We will not beg but ensure justice is served.” He criticized the initial handling of the case, noting that there was no proper investigation for months after the crime.
The main accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested soon after the incident and charged with rape and murder. However, questions remain about the involvement of others. Protesters, including junior doctors, have raised concerns about evidence tampering and the lack of clear answers from investigators. Many are demanding the death penalty for Roy and further action against anyone else involved.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case on August 13, 2024, following a court order. However, their handling of the case has been criticized. Two other individuals, former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala Police Station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mandal, were arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence but were granted bail when the CBI failed to submit a chargesheet on time.
Political leaders have also commented on the case. Some accuse the state and central governments of negligence, while others claim powerful people might be involved in a cover-up. Protests across the country have demanded harsh punishment for the accused and full justice for the victim.
As the court prepares to announce its decision, the public hopes for a verdict that ensures accountability and justice.
