New 132-Seater Electric Bus with 'Bus Hostess' Announced by Gadkari
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled a groundbreaking public transport project at the NDTV Infrashakti Awards to tackle India's pollution issues. The initiative features a 132-seater bus with aeroplane-like seating and a "bus hostess."
In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Gadkari emphasized that the bus will use non-polluting energy sources and remain cost-effective, and cheaper to operate than traditional diesel buses. He highlighted the government's vision to transform India from an energy importer to an energy exporter.
"Pollution in air, water, and noise is a major challenge, especially in cities like Delhi. Our goal is to develop indigenous, affordable, and pollution-free transport solutions, with electric vehicles being key," Gadkari explained. He also mentioned advancements in ethanol infrastructure and flex-fuel vehicles by Indian Oil and automakers.
Gadkari pointed out the economic benefits, stating that using ethanol could cut fuel costs in half compared to petrol and significantly reduce pollution.
He also stressed the government's efforts to make public transport more affordable. Operational costs for AC electric buses have dropped from ₹115 to ₹41 per kilometre, and non-AC buses now cost ₹37 per kilometre with subsidies. This cost reduction is expected to lower ticket prices by 15-20%.
"In collaboration with Tata Motors, we are launching a pilot project in Nagpur inspired by the Czech Republic's trolley bus system. This 132-seater bus will run efficiently along a 49 km route using rapid charging technology, recharging in just 40 seconds at designated stops," Gadkari elaborated.
This ambitious project aims to set new standards in sustainable urban transport, with operational costs projected at ₹35-40 per kilometre. It promises to revolutionize public transport in Nagpur and serve as a model for future developments across India.
