New “Made in India” Doppler Radar to Boost Weather Predictions in Nagpur

Nagpur, India: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is planning to install a new X-Band Doppler Weather Radar in Nagpur to improve weather monitoring, especially after the city has faced several cloud bursts in recent years. The new radar will help provide more accurate and detailed weather data, especially during severe weather events.

Currently, Nagpur has an S-Band Doppler Weather Radar located at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, which can gather data from up to 500 km away. However, this radar has faced problems during heavy rains and cloud bursts, causing delays in weather forecasting. To address this, the IMD has decided to install the new X-Band radar, which is a “Made in India” model and will be more efficient.

The new radar will be able to cover a smaller area of 100-150 km but will provide much clearer and more accurate data. It will also have dual-polarisation capability, which will allow it to detect severe weather more effectively. Unlike the current radar, which needs manual adjustments, the new system will be fully computer-controlled, allowing quicker data processing and sending updates to the command center within just eight minutes.

This upgrade will strengthen Nagpur’s weather monitoring and help improve predictions during extreme weather, making it easier to respond to any unexpected weather events.
