NMC Ignores Constructions on Nag River Retaining Wall

Nagpur, India: Constructions on drainage walls in Nagpur are increasing, but the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has not taken any action. People have built unauthorised ramps and structures on the retaining walls of the Nag River and nullahs in Bhagwan Nagar (Hanuman Nagar Zone) and Canal Road, Ramdaspeth.

In Bhagwan Nagar, some people have built ramps over the nullah to make private entryways for their homes. Similarly, in Ramdaspeth, people have constructed structures directly on retaining walls, which weakens the walls and increases the risk of collapse, waterlogging, and flooding.

Laws Clearly Prohibit These Constructions

As per the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR) 2020, no construction is allowed on water bodies or their retaining walls. The Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966, also prohibits illegal constructions and allows authorities to demolish them. Additionally, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Act gives the municipal commissioner the power to remove structures that block drainage systems.

No Action from NMC

Despite these laws, the NMC has not issued any demolition notices or stopped these illegal activities. Many people believe that corruption or negligence may be the reason behind this inaction.

Experts Warn of Future Problems

Experts say that if the retaining walls collapse, it could cause severe damage to nearby areas. Environmentalist Anusuya Kale Chhabrani said, "If the city keeps ignoring these issues, we will face serious environmental problems in the future."

Many citizens and activists are now demanding that the NMC take immediate action to remove illegal constructions and protect the city's water bodies before it's too late.
