NMC installing 2,800 bins in the city, which includes 200 smart bins

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated a new project to install 2,800 bins, including 2,400 litter bins and 200 smart bins equipped with sensors, in commercial areas and marketplaces. The installation cost for this project is Rs 2 crore. The smart bins will have a capacity of 1,100 liters each and will send alerts to the civic personnel and garbage collectors when they are full. They will also have fire detectors to make them fireproof. The GPS-enabled bins will be linked to a dashboard installed at the Smart City office in the NMC’s new administrative building, and the civic body aims to ensure regular emptying of these bins.

The NMC declared itself a bin-free city in 2009 and hired a private company, Kanak Resources Management, to collect and dispose of household garbage at Bhandewadi Dumping Yard. However, the garbage disposal mechanism for commercial areas and marketplaces was inefficient, leading to the installation of 1,200 twin bins in 2017. These bins were either damaged, burned or stolen, and the situation remained unchanged. The current project aims to solve this issue by providing efficient garbage disposal and keeping the commercial areas clean.

According to an NSSCDCL official, the Dharampeth zone has the highest number of installed smart bins - 40 pairs of smart bins, out of a total 200 pairs. In addition, the civic body is planning separate routes for door-to-door garbage lifting firms to further enhance the garbage disposal process.

However, the report suggests that ensuring the safety of these smart bins from vandals may be a challenging task for the civic body. In addition, the citizens play a significant role in maintaining the city's cleanliness. The NMC's new initiative is expected to improve the garbage disposal mechanism, but the citizens' cooperation is also necessary.
