NMC to Fine Employees for Dumping Sewage in Pohra River

Nagpur, India: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to fine its employees after a report revealed that a suction-cum-jetting machine was dumping sewage into the Pohra River.

The machine, which is used to remove muck from sewage chambers and drains, was seen discharging sewage into the river from a culvert in the Hudkeshwar area. This happened despite NMC's ongoing efforts to clean the city's rivers, including the Pohra River, with a Rs 900 crore project.

The Pohra River project aims to improve the water quality by laying a new sewage network and replacing old pipes. However, this incident raised concerns about NMC’s commitment to cleaning the rivers.

In response, Dr Gajendra Mahalle, Deputy Commissioner of NMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, confirmed that the responsible employees would face fines. He also stated that all zones have been instructed not to dump sewage in rivers, and the proper place to dispose of sewage is at Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).

NMC has also bought new suction-cum-jetting machines to better manage the city's sewage, with strict guidelines for how they should be used. This action aims to prevent such incidents and ensure the city’s rivers are kept clean.
