Nagpur, India: A high-level meeting on law and order in Nagpur was held under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, where he directed the police department to enforce a ‘zero tolerance’ policy regarding the recent violence in the city.
Fadnavis stated that a detailed review was conducted on the sequence of events and the action taken after the violence. He said misinformation spread on social media led to the incident, but the police managed to bring the situation under control within 4-5 hours. So far, 104 people have been identified through CCTV footage, and 92 of them have been arrested. Among them, 12 are minors and have been dealt with according to relevant laws. Efforts are ongoing to identify more individuals involved.
The chief minister warned that those who spread false information on social media will also be treated as co-accused in the riots case. He revealed that 68 social media posts were made to incite violence, which were later deleted. He assured that compensation will be provided to those whose vehicles and property were damaged during the incident, and the cost will be recovered from the rioters.
Fadnavis further clarified that except for the curfew zones, life in the rest of Nagpur is returning to normal. Police are monitoring the situation in the curfew-imposed areas and will consider relaxing restrictions if conditions improve.
He emphasised that anyone attempting to disturb law and order will be dealt with strictly. He also confirmed that the planned visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nagpur on March 30 will proceed without any changes.
The meeting was attended by Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the Inspector General of Police (Nagpur Range), the Nagpur City Police Commissioner, the District Collector, and other senior police officers.
