One Month After City Flooding, Nagpur Awaits Compensation for Extensive Damage
Approximately one month ago, Nagpur endured a catastrophic cloud-burst and consequent flooding. The disaster resulted in the inundation of several parts of the city. The floodwaters wreaked havoc, invading 28,000 homes and leading to the collapse of river-nullah walls, roads, and culverts within the Municipal Corporation's boundaries. Furthermore, roads within the Smart City region suffered significant damage.
In response to this catastrophe, the Municipal Corporation assessed the damages, revealing an estimated loss of Rs 235 crore. A proposal, summarizing these losses, was subsequently forwarded to the state government via the District Collector.
The city now eagerly awaits the government's response concerning the compensation for these substantial losses. It's worth noting that a prior loss report had been submitted to the government, but there has been no response as yet.
The flooding event, which took place from midnight on October 22 to 5 a.m. on October 23, witnessed the city receiving 109 mm of rainfall within just 4 hours. Ambazari lake overflowed, triggering the flow of rivers and nullahs throughout the city. Many homes along these waterways were impacted by water and mud, resulting in extensive damages.
In addition to residential property damage, infrastructure within the city suffered significantly. A total of 46.8 km of road, two culverts, and 8.41 km of river-drain wall incurred damages.
The Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, visited the flood-affected regions and pledged Rs 10,000 in compensation for those whose homes were flooded. A collaborative district and municipal administration team conducted assessments to determine the extent of the damage.
The flooding also impacted businesses as hundreds of shops and malls were inundated, leading to the spoilage of goods worth lakhs of rupees. However, the traders have yet to receive any compensation.
A senior Municipal Corporation official stated that while a comprehensive loss report has been prepared and sent to the government, the timeline for receiving the compensation remains uncertain.
