Over 300 Notices Issued as Mosquito Threat Grows in Nagpur

Nagpur, India: With a sharp rise in mosquito numbers, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has issued 304 notices to residents to stop mosquito breeding and prevent diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.
A recent survey found that Gandhibagh zone has the most mosquito breeding spots, with 183 active sites. Hanuman Nagar recorded 87 breeding points, while Mangalwari zone reported 19. The high presence of mosquitoes, especially the Culex species, has raised concerns about the spread of diseases.
To tackle the problem, NMC is taking strict action against people who allow water to stagnate around their homes. “We are issuing notices and will take further action if needed. People must ensure there is no stagnant water,” said an NMC official.
The civic body has deployed 10 vehicle-mounted fogging machines and 70 handheld fogging machines to spray insecticides across the city. However, the department is short-staffed and is working with fewer workers than required.
NMC is also cleaning drains and rivers to control mosquito breeding. Water collecting at road construction sites is being treated with insecticides and mosquito larvicidal oil (MLO). Officials say blocked sewage, garbage dumping, and weeds in the Nag River are making the mosquito problem worse, especially near the Nag, Pili, and Pora rivers.
In areas where dengue and chikungunya cases have been reported, NMC teams are visiting homes, spraying insecticides, and using fogging machines. Awareness drives and surveys are also being carried out in high-risk areas.
The civic body urges residents to cooperate by keeping their surroundings clean and preventing mosquito breeding to reduce the risk of diseases.
