Nagpur, India: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will now use only machines to clean sewer and drainage lines in the city. This decision was made to stop using manual labour and to solve complaints about drainage blockages more efficiently.
NMC Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary has ordered that no workers should clean drains manually. Instead, the NMC is using suction cum jetting machines for the job. The corporation has 11 machines of its own and has rented 11 more. Big machines are used on main roads, while smaller ones clean narrow lanes and crowded areas. These machines are also used in areas managed by the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and Public Works Department (PWD).
According to Deputy Commissioner Vijay Deshmukh, the NMC received 89,572 complaints about sewer blockages between October 2024 and February 7. Out of these, 88,613 have been fixed, and work is ongoing on the remaining 951 complaints. Some of these require new pipelines, which the Public Health Engineering Department is handling.
Many sewer lines in Nagpur are very old, leading to frequent blockages. To improve the system, the NMC will add five more cleaning machines soon. The corporation is also working on replacing old sewer lines under the Amrut Yojana to increase drainage capacity and reduce problems for citizens.
The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) is also working with the NMC to replace old pipelines in areas where they are outdated.
