OYO to Reject Check-Ins from Unmarried Couples in This City – Find Out If It's Yours
New Delhi, India: OYO has introduced a new policy allowing its partner hotels to refuse check-ins for unmarried couples. The policy, which will begin in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, aims to align with "social sensibilities."
Under the updated policy, all couples will be required to show valid proof of their relationship when checking in, including for online bookings. OYO has given its partner hotels the discretion to deny bookings based on local judgment.
The decision follows feedback from civil society groups in Meerut, as well as petitions from residents in other cities who requested that unmarried couples be prevented from checking in at OYO hotels. OYO stated that it plans to expand this policy to more cities across India.
“OYO is committed to ensuring safe hospitality practices. While we respect personal freedoms, we also have a responsibility to work with local law enforcement and civil society groups,” said Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India.
The new policy is part of OYO's broader effort to change perceptions and position itself as a brand that provides safe, trusted experiences for all types of travellers, including families, students, business travellers, and religious tourists. The company also hopes to encourage longer stays and repeat bookings, strengthening customer loyalty.
OYO has been conducting nationwide initiatives such as seminars with police and hotel partners to promote safe hospitality practices. The company is also blacklisting hotels linked to immoral activities and taking action against unauthorized hotels using the OYO brand.
