Payal Kapadia Wins Grand Prix at Cannes, PM Modi Congratulates Her
Filmmaker Payal Kapadia has brought immense pride to India by winning the Grand Prix award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her film "All We Imagine As Light." This historic achievement marks her as the first Indian filmmaker to win the Grand Prix, the festival's second-most prestigious prize after the Palme d'Or.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Kapadia, praising her for her creativity and for inspiring future generations of storytellers. "India is proud of Payal Kapadia for her historic feat of winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her work 'All We Imagine as Light'," Modi stated. He lauded her as an FTII alumnus whose remarkable talent continues to shine globally, showcasing India's rich creativity. "This prestigious accolade not only honours her exceptional skills but also inspires a new generation of Indian filmmakers," he added.
Kapadia's film, which was the first Indian entry in the main competition in 30 years and the first ever by an Indian female director, stood out among works from renowned filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, Paolo Sorrentino, Paul Schrader, and Yorgos Lanthimos.
She received the Grand Prix from American actor Viola Davis at an awards ceremony held on the festival's final day. Kapadia was accompanied by her cast members Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam.
This accolade not only highlights Kapadia's talent but also signifies a moment of pride for Indian cinema on the global stage. Her achievement is expected to pave the way for more Indian filmmakers to gain recognition in international arenas.
