PCOS's unknown effects on women's fertility health
One of the most prevalent endocrine conditions affecting women of reproductive age is polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS. It is believed that between 5% and 10% of women globally experience its symptoms, and 1 in 5 women in India have PCOS.
PCOS can greatly affect a woman's ability to conceive, from irregular monthly periods to infertility, although it does not preclude pregnancy. Many PCOS women can conceive successfully with the right care, which includes medication, lifestyle modifications, and fertility procedures.
Symptoms of PCOS-
- Period irregularities
- Heavy bleeding
- Excessive hair growth
- Acne
- Headaches
- Darkening of skin
Effect of PCOS on Fertility-
1. Irregular or no ovulation: The hormonal imbalance frequently stops the ovaries from producing an egg in people with PCOS. It is challenging to conceive when ovulation is absent or delayed.
2. Hormonal imbalance: In women with PCOS, elevated levels of androgens, such as testosterone, can interfere with ovulation and cause symptoms like weight gain, acne, and excessive hair growth. The delicate balance required for healthy ovarian function may be upset by these hormonal shifts.
3. Insulin resistance: Insulin resistance, which occurs when cells in the body don't react to insulin as well, is common in women with PCOS. Obesity is also associated with insulin resistance, which might affect fertility.
