Rape Accused Roshan Sheikh Escapes, Gittikhadan Police Under Scrutiny
Nagpur, India: Nagpur’s Gittikhadan Police are facing scrutiny after rape accused and gangster Roshan Sheikh managed to flee just before his arrest. Sheikh, who had allegedly threatened to attack the victim with acid, escaped moments before police arrived, raising suspicions of an internal information leak.
A 29-year-old woman had filed a complaint against Sheikh at Sadar Police Station in February, accusing him of rape and other serious offenses. He was arrested but later released on bail on March 6. After his release, Sheikh allegedly threatened to leak private photos of the victim online and, along with his brother Abu, warned her to withdraw the complaint, even issuing death threats.
Following a fresh complaint, Gittikhadan Police registered an FIR against Sheikh. However, he went into hiding after learning about the case.
On Sunday night, the victim spotted Sheikh at a salon in Dharampeth and alerted the police. Officers rushed to the location, but Sheikh, reportedly tipped off through a mobile call, fled in a car before they arrived.
The incident has sparked concerns over a possible information leak from within the police department. Senior officials are now investigating the lapse and trying to identify who might have warned the accused.
