Rare Wildlife Is Welcomed at Gorewada Zoo in Exchange with Lucknow Zoo
The Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park in Gorewada received a number of herbivores and birds, including endangered species, from the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden in Lucknow on Monday as part of a significant animal exchange initiative with a zoo outside of Maharashtra.
Six hog deer, including two males, were given to the Gorewada Zoo as part of the exchange program. Hog deer are an endangered species that may be found in Pakistan and Northern India. The zoo also purchased two blue-yellow macaws, which are uncommon in India and usually native to South America.
Four painted storks, two saras cranes, and seven swamp deer (Barasingha), including two males, also arrived at the zoo. Gorewada Zoo gave two sloth bears to Lucknow Zoo in return.
There are now four sloth bears at the Gorewada Zoo after sending two of them. In addition, the zoo is home to more than 50 herbivores, including sambar, barking deer, nilgai, chital, and Sangai deer, as well as two tigers, five leopards, and blackbucks. In 2021, the zoo's current herbivores arrived from Delhi Zoo as part of the inaugural animal exchange program.
