Ironman Ravinder Singal Appointed as Nagpur’s New Police Commissioner

Dr. Ravinder Singal, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1996 batch, has been appointed as the Commissioner of Police (CP) for Nagpur City. The State Home Department announced on Tuesday as part of a complete reshuffling of IPS officers across the state. The current CP of Nagpur, Amitesh Kumar, will take the role of the new CP for Pune City. Originally from Delhi, Dr. Singal holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and LLB and PhD degrees in Management Science and Crowd Management.

Dr. Singal commenced his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Sangli in 1998, progressing through roles such as DCP Headquarters and DCP (City) in Amravati in 2000. His initial posting was as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Nashik in 2002, followed by a transfer to Dhule as SP in 2004. Notably, he served on the United Nations UN Kosovo team representatives from 2005 to 2007.

In 2007, Dr. Singal assumed the role of SP in Nanded and later became the SP of the Government Railway Police in Nagpur in 2009. During his tenure in Nagpur city, he served as the Additional Commissioner of Police in 2010 and held the position of Director of the South Central Zone Cultural Center from 2010 to 2014. His career also saw him appointed as the Additional CP (Crime) in Thane in 2014, followed by a swift transfer to Mumbai Railways as IGP/CP within six months. In 2015, he took on the role of IGP Police Headquarters in Mumbai and became the CP of Nashik in 2016, where he served for almost two-and-a-half years. He went on to become the IGP of the Aurangabad range from 2019 to 2020 and was subsequently appointed as the Controller of Legal Metrology from 2020 to 2023.

Before his current posting as CP in Nagpur, Dr. Singal served as the ADG Traffic for Maharashtra. At the age of 51, Dr. Singal achieved a milestone by becoming India’s first police officer in the 50+ years category to win the title of Ironman in Vichy, France, on August 26, 2018. The Ironman competition is a tiring 226-kilometre non-stop event comprising 3.8 km open water swimming, 180.2 km cycling, and 42.2 km running, which he completed in an impressive 15 hours and 13 minutes.
