Resident Doctors in Nagpur to Strike Over Kolkata Rape and Murder Case

Nagpur, India: A nationwide protest has fueled the miserable rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Government R.G. Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal. There is a growing demand for a fair investigation into the case, with calls for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over. Central MARD (Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors) is also pushing for improved security measures for doctors nationwide.

In response to the incident, Central MARD has announced a strike starting Tuesday, 13th August. Resident doctors at Mayo Hospital and Medical College in Nagpur will join the strike, resulting in the suspension of all normal services except for emergency care.

Emergency Services to Continue Amid Strike

In the wake of the Kolkata incident, the police have registered a case of rape and have arrested a suspect based on CCTV footage. However, there is still a strong demand for a CBI inquiry to ensure a fair investigation and justice for the deceased doctor. Additionally, there is an urgent call to enhance security measures for all doctors, particularly resident doctors, in government colleges.

Central MARD has clarified that all necessary security measures must be implemented immediately. The state government has been informed about the strike. Central MARD President Pratik Debaje stated that while emergency services will remain operational on Tuesday, all other routine services will be suspended. As a result, work at Mayo Medical is expected to be significantly impacted.
