Retired PWD Engineer Charged with Embezzling ₹42 Lakh in Nagpur

Nagpur, India: The Sadar police have registered a case of criminal breach of trust against Toliram Rathod, a retired deputy divisional engineer of the state public works department (PWD), for allegedly embezzling ₹42 lakh during his tenure at the PWD office on Sadar Link Road between 2009 and 2011.

The case was filed following a complaint by the PWD office last week. The alleged embezzlement came to light during internal inquiries and audits, which revealed that Rathod had issued cheques for labor payments during the 2009 winter assembly sessions without the necessary work orders or approvals.

The audit found that although approximately ₹44 lakh had been paid out, only ₹2 lakh could be properly accounted for. The remaining ₹42 lakh is suspected to have been diverted by Rathod for personal use, according to the complaint. The complaint further states that Rathod falsely documented the cheques as payments to labor contractors and sub-contractors for work that was never carried out.
