Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Trailer: Karan Johar's Tribute to Bollywood Romance

The trailer for Karan Johar's latest film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, has been released, confirming expectations of a quintessential Bollywood family drama filled with romance, emotions, and captivating song and dance sequences. The star-studded cast includes Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi, portraying pivotal roles in the film.

Soon after the trailer's release, Alia Bhatt engaged in an Instagram Stories AMA session with her fans. When asked about her experience shooting the song "Tum Kya Mile" after her pregnancy, Alia shared a photo of herself from the shoot in Kashmir. She captioned it, "This was taken on the last day of the shoot... I may look tired but I am satisfied! Returning to work as a new mom in any profession is never easy... but I am grateful and feel privileged to have a team and crew that is understanding and supportive."

The trailer introduces us to Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh), a carefree individual who has fallen head over heels for Rani (Alia). Rani hails from a well-educated Bengali family in Kolkata, while Rocky's character resonates with his earlier performance in Band Baaja Baaraat, albeit in a more affluent avatar. With their worlds being polar opposites, they decide to "swap" their families before marriage to determine if their relationship can withstand the challenges. However, their attempts to assimilate into each other's families prove unsuccessful, with Jaya Bachchan's character, Dhanlakshmi, seemingly becoming the antagonist in Rani and Rocky's "imperfect" love story.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marks Karan Johar's return to the director's chair since his 2016 film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. While he directed two short films as part of the anthology dramas Lust Stories and Ghost Stories, this movie marks his full-length feature film comeback. With Rocky Aur Rani, Karan aims to pay tribute to his mentor, the late Yash Chopra, often hailed as the "King of Romance" in Hindi cinema.

In a previous interview, Karan Johar expressed that Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani exists in a similar vein to his iconic film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He stated that during the pandemic, he felt a desire to create a movie that would transport him back to his 25-year-old self. Karan viewed Kuch Kuch Hota Hai as a culmination of all the films he grew up watching, making it a homage to renowned filmmakers such as Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, and Sooraj Barjatya.
