Sewage Chaos in Nagpur’s Kamptee Road Due to Flyover Construction, Say Locals

Nagpur, India: A sanitation disaster has erupted in Nagpur’s Kamptee Road area, with overflowing sewage near Shriram Towers now threatening public health. The cause, according to furious residents and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), is the construction of the Kamptee Flyover by Maha Metro.

A recent report from NMC reveals that, during the flyover construction between LIC Square and Mount Road, vital manholes linked to an essential sewer line were buried under layers of concrete and asphalt. These manholes, which serve several high-rise buildings including LIC, Garish Heights, and Shriram Towers, were not marked or left accessible for future maintenance.

As a result, the sewer system has become blocked, causing raw sewage to back up into homes and streets. Local residents are calling out Maha Metro for ignoring their repeated warnings to properly mark the manhole locations. “They just paved over everything—now we’re left with this nightmare,” said a local resident, clearly distressed by the situation.

NMC’s Health Department confirmed the issue, pointing out that the concrete slabs placed over the manholes have made it impossible to conduct necessary maintenance or repairs. Despite this, Maha Metro has denied responsibility, claiming that the problem existed before the flyover project began—a statement dismissed as misleading by NMC engineers.

“This is not just carelessness, it’s a public safety issue,” said an NMC official. The corporation has warned that if the situation is not addressed immediately, parts of the flyover may need to be excavated to access the blocked sewer line, which could cause significant disruptions on one of the city’s busiest roads.

What was once seen as a major infrastructure achievement, the Kamptee Flyover, is now viewed by many as an example of poor planning and lack of accountability. The NMC is demanding urgent action from Maha Metro to resolve the issue and prevent further damage to the city’s infrastructure and public health.
