Shivaji Maharaj’s Legendary Wagh Nakh on Display in Nagpur for 8 Month

Nagpur: The legendary Wagh Nakh (Tiger Claws) used by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be on display at Nagpur’s Central Museum (Ajab Bangla) for the next eight months. This gives citizens a rare chance to see an important piece of Maratha history up close.

The Wagh Nakh, brought back from the UK by the Maharashtra government, is the main attraction of the Shivashastra Shaurya Gatha exhibition, inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He urged people to visit the museum, saying, "Wagh Nakh is a symbol of Maharashtra's glorious history. Everyone should witness it and understand its importance."

The exhibition, open to the public from Saturday, will allow 50 visitors at a time to ensure proper viewing and preservation. A special exhibition area has been set up, showcasing Maratha weapons like swords, shields, and Dandpatta, Maharashtra’s state weapon. Visitors can also explore an open sculpture gallery and inscription exhibits related to medieval warfare.

Historical Significance

The Wagh Nakh was used by Shivaji Maharaj on November 10, 1659, to kill Afzal Khan, a general of the Bijapur Sultanate, at Pratapgad Fort. This event marked a major turning point in the rise of the Maratha Empire.

To enhance the experience, fort expert Atul Guru has created a detailed replica of Pratapgad Fort within the museum. "This exhibition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about Maharashtra’s rich heritage and honor Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy," he said.

Journey of the Wagh Nakh

After centuries, the Wagh Nakh was kept at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 2023-24, then Cultural Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar signed an agreement to bring it back to Maharashtra for three years. Since then, it has been displayed in different parts of the state, first appearing in Satara on July 19, 2024.

Upcoming Events

With Shiv Jayanti approaching on February 19, grand celebrations are planned, including:

  • Lectures and discussions on Maratha history and warfare
  • Kirtans and cultural programs about Shivaji Maharaj’s life
  • Martial arts demonstrations (Mardani Khel)
  • Educational tours for students from across Vidarbha

This exhibition is a golden chance for history lovers to see the legendary Wagh Nakh and learn about the bravery of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
