Signs and Symptoms of Self neglect
We end up ignoring ourselves when we do not put ourselves and our feelings first. Are you ignoring your feelings and yourself? You might have grown up believing that your emotional needs aren't important if your emotions weren't adequately attended to during your childhood.
Psychologist Carolyn Rubenstein described the symptoms of self-neglect as follows: "Even if your emotions were nurtured as a child, you might have learned to suppress them at some point."
1. We choose to repress and dismiss tough feelings like sadness, rage, and frustration rather than dealing with them.
2. We typically steer clear of circumstances that would call for vulnerability, including close relationships or meaningful interactions.
3. Instead of placing ourselves first, we frequently prioritize and pay attention to the needs and feelings of others.
4. We don't prioritize our personal satisfaction. We deliberately turn away from things that can make us happy, content, and relaxed.
5. We speak negatively and have a critical inner voice. We also absorb the guilt and responsibility for everything that goes wrong.
