State Government has Approved a Budget of Rs 10,625 crore for the Expansion of the Koradi Thermal Power Station

The Maharashtra Government has given the green light to allocate a budget of Rs 10,625 crore for the expansion of the Koradi Thermal Power Station, in response to the growing demand for energy.

During a recent Cabinet meeting, the Energy Department's proposal was approved, entailing that the state would contribute 20 per cent of the total funds as equity for the Koradi project, which amounts to Rs 2,125 crore. The remaining 80 per cent, approximately Rs 8,500 crore, will be obtained as a loan by the company.

This decision from the Cabinet serves to bolster MahaGenco's plan to establish two new units of 660 MW each at Koradi. These units will employ super-critical technology, known for its enhanced production efficiency and reduced emissions. Notably, these new units will supplement the existing three 600 MW super-critical units already operational at Koradi.

In June 2019, the previous Maharashtra Government had granted in-principle approval to MahaGenco for the construction of two 660 MW units at Koradi, necessitating the decommissioning and dismantling of two older units at the site. MahaGenco has also secured the lease of the Gare Palma-II coal mine in Chhattisgarh State to source coal for the Koradi expansion project.

In order to facilitate the swift transportation of coal to the new units, the company has independently funded the Itwari-Nagbhid Broad Gauge project, as the existing Howrah-Mumbai route faces congestion issues.

The district administration has already conducted a public hearing to obtain environmental clearance for the Koradi TPS expansion project. However, the outcome of this hearing remains uncertain, as environmentalists have lodged complaints with the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, alleging irregularities during the public hearing process.

The Cabinet's approval of the state government's financial allocation effectively signals the green light for MahaGenco to proceed with the project.
