Teenage Sisters Arrested in Bhilai for Grandmother's Murder Over Property
Nagpur, India: In a chilling case from Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, two teenage sisters have been arrested for the murder of their grandmother, allegedly motivated by a desire for property. The sisters, originally from Nagpur, executed the crime with a disturbing level of planning.
The arrested girl, Deepjot Kaur Baljinder Singh Sandhu, 18, and her 17-year-old sister, were taken into custody by Bhilai Police. The minor has been sent to a juvenile correctional home. They are accused of killing their maternal grandmother, Atinder Kaur Amarsingh Sahni, 56, a resident of Purai, Bhilai.
According to police, the sisters arrived in Durg from Nagpur on July 24, travelling by Chhattisgarh Express. They took an auto-rickshaw to their grandmother's home, where they carried out the murder. Upon Atinder opening the door, they overpowered her, gagged her, tied her up, and ultimately killed her using a steel water bottle after suffocating her with a pillow.
The sisters then stole valuables worth over Rs 5 lakh, including ornaments, a mobile phone, Rs 40,000 in cash, and gold jewellery. They also took Atinder’s scooter keys, locked the house from the outside, and travelled to Rajnandgaon. From there, they transported the scooter by bus to Nagpur, abandoned it near railway tracks, and returned home.
The crime was uncovered when Atinder’s niece, Rajpreet Singh, noticed her aunt was unreachable for several days. Growing concerned, she visited the house, broke the lock, and discovered Atinder’s decomposed body. Initially, the police classified the case as accidental death, but after a postmortem and missing jewellery were discovered, they reclassified it as murder and robbery.
Further investigation revealed that Atinder's daughters in Nagpur had previously threatened her over money. Police traced the sisters to Nagpur, where they initially misled investigators but eventually confessed to the crime. They had hidden the stolen jewellery with an acquaintance, which was later recovered. The Bhilai Police have reconstructed the sequence of events and seized the stolen items based on the sisters' confessions.
