The Prof. P. Khanna Memorial Lecture was organized by CSIR-NEERI

On August 14, 2023, in the NEERI Auditorium, the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) hosted the Prof. P. Khanna Memorial Lecture. On this occasion, the chief guest was Dr. P Sivaswaroop, Senior Regional Director, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Nagpur. On this occasion, Dr. Atul Vaidya, Director of the CSIR-NEERI, and Prakash Kumbhare, Senior Principal Scientist, were also present.

Dr. Sivaswaroop referred to Prof. P. Khanna as a visionary environmental educator while presenting the Prof. P. Khanna Memorial Lecture on "Impact of National Education Policy 2020 on Future Environmental Education." According to him, the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) is a ground-breaking leap forward that will cause a paradigm shift in the nation's educational system.  He stated that NEP 2020 will offer transdisciplinary, immersive, and student-centered education. He stated that the National Education Policy is closely tied to India's future environmental goals, the instillation of environmental respect, and the appropriate integration of environmental awareness and sensitivity towards its conservation and sustainable development.

According to him, the current school curriculum already includes lessons on water conservation and is saturated with concerns, concepts, and challenges relating to this topic. Dr. Sivaswaroop elaborated on the "Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER)," a statistical indicator used in the education sector to determine the number of students enrolled, noting that the NEP 2020 aims to raise the GER to 100% in preschool through secondary level by 2030 and from 26.3% in 2018 to 50% in higher education, including vocational education. He suggested that CSIR-NEERI start some online environmental courses in line with NEP 2020. He also discussed the many environmental courses offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Dr. Atul Vaidya, Director, CSIR-NEERI, gave a brief introduction to the outstanding achievements of Late Prof. P. Khanna in his welcoming address. He said that CSIR-NEERI received national and worldwide recognition from Prof. Khanna. The vote of gratitude was proposed by Mr. Prakash Kumbhare, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEERI, and was presided over by Dr. Shalini Dhyani, Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEERI. On this occasion, 25 B.Sc. and M.Sc. students from Institute of Science, Nagpur and 38 B.E. (Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering) students from G H Raisoni Institute of Engineering & Technology visited the laboratories of CSIR-NEERI and spoke with scientists.
