Thunderstorms Expected: IMD Raises Yellow Alert for Nagpur and Vidarbha
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "yellow alert" for Nagpur city and the Vidarbha region starting from Monday, lasting for the next four days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are predicted to occur in isolated areas.
According to the IMD, thunderstorms with lightning are expected in isolated places throughout Vidarbha on Monday and Tuesday. The same alert, indicating heavy rainfall in some regions, has been extended to Wednesday and Thursday as well. However, the department's previous alert for the past five days turned out to be inaccurate, as the rain clouds only opened up over the city last night. This resulted in a reduction of the rainfall backlog for the month, which went down from 35 per cent to 20 per cent. Throughout the day, the skies remained overcast with minimal rainfall until early evening.
The department states that favourable conditions for rain are developing in Vidarbha and neighbouring states such as Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. A low-pressure system with cyclonic circulation has formed near Rajasthan. Similarly, a favourable condition has also developed on the western side, which may lead to rainfall in the area. Meanwhile, from June 1 to July 9, the city experienced a total of 215.5 mm of rainfall.
Currently, Bhandara and Gondia, known as the rice bowls of Vidarbha, have received 15 per cent and 12 per cent more rainfall respectively. This has proven beneficial for paddy crops, which require a substantial amount of water.
