Tiger Reserves in Vidarbha Says

Nagpur, India- Following strong criticism from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) after a tigress was surrounded by 150 tourists in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), various Tiger Reserves in Vidarbha have banned U-turns and reverse driving on safari tracks to prevent overcrowding. This decision was implemented immediately by Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR), Umred Paoni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary (UPKWS), and TATR management in both core and buffer areas.

On May 17, a tigress named Roma (T-114) was cornered by tourist vehicles on the Khatoda-Tadoba road, leading to significant criticism on social media and NTCA labelling it as "eco-terrorism." In response, TATR management suspended 10 guides and 10 safari vehicles for a month and initiated an inquiry. Previously, TATR had also penalized numerous Gypsy drivers and guides for rule violations.

To prevent future incidents, all Tiger Reserves have now restricted U-turns and reverse driving during tiger sightings. Dr Prabhunath Shukla, Deputy Director of PTR, explained that these measures are necessary to avoid overcrowding and ensure the safety of both tourists and tigers. Some routes will be made one-way to further reduce the risk of cornering tigers.

PTR operates 150 Gypsy vehicles in two daily shifts, with seven gates open for jungle safaris. The management has also introduced preventive measures in Umred Karhandla, where tiger sightings are frequent. Additionally, fines will be imposed for illegal activities during safaris, and guides and drivers have been instructed to follow safety rules strictly.

During the monsoon season, when jungle safaris are restricted, TATR management plans to conduct training workshops for guides and drivers to enhance safety and prevent incidents similar to the one involving the tigress Roma.
