Traffic Increase in Koradi Adds to Pollution Woes, Says Mahagenco

Mahagenco alleges a connection between pollution in Koradi and that in Nagpur City, primarily attributing it to emissions from thermal power plants. This assertion, made in response to a report submitted to the High Court, underscores the unusual nature of the claim.

The Nagpur bench of the High Court is currently considering a petition opposing the expansion of two 660-megawatt projects at the Koradi power plant, filed by Vidarbha Connect.

During the ongoing hearings, Mahagenco presented data from a survey conducted on January 29 and 30 at B.P. Vidyalaya in Koradi, indicating an increase in pollution levels, as reported by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). In response, Mahagenco countered with figures from the Central Pollution Control Board, suggesting that pollution in Nagpur was higher on the survey day. Additionally, they highlighted wind patterns blowing pollutants from Nagpur towards the northeast, specifically impacting the area around B.P. Vidyalaya due to humid conditions.

Furthermore, Mahagenco contends that pollution levels near the thermal power plant remain within prescribed limits. They also cite increased traffic on Koradi roads as a contributing factor to rising pollution levels.
