Vehicles on Footpaths to Be Towed as Nagpur Police Tighten Rules

Nagpur, India: The Nagpur City Police are set to launch an initiative called 'Footpath Freedom' to reclaim public footpaths and ensure they are accessible for pedestrians. The move comes in response to widespread encroachments on footpaths, primarily due to the increasing shortage of parking spaces on major roads and in busy markets. Footpaths, originally for pedestrian use, have been converted into parking lots, and in some cases, they are also being used for the display of goods for sale.

Additionally, hawkers have set up their shops on footpaths, further hindering pedestrian movement. As a result, pedestrians often find themselves walking on roads, which reduces the available space for vehicles, leading to traffic congestion and increased safety risks.

In coordination with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the City Police have warned the public that any vehicles parked on footpaths will face legal consequences. Those violating the rules will be penalized under Sections 122, 127, and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and Sections 102 and 117 of the Maharashtra Police Act. A notification issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Archit Chandak, has emphasized the importance of parking vehicles in designated areas to avoid penalties.

As part of the 'Footpath Freedom' initiative, the police, along with NMC, will begin removing four-wheelers and two-wheelers parked on footpaths. The authorities also warned hawkers to refrain from occupying footpaths, as these spaces are meant for pedestrians to walk safely, free from the danger of traffic.

This initiative aims to improve pedestrian safety, reduce traffic congestion, and ensure that public footpaths remain accessible to all.
