Vikatan Website Blocked After Controversial Cartoon of Prime Minister Narendra Modi

India: On February 15, Vikatan, a well known media group in Tamil Nadu, said its website was "blocked." This happened after K. Annamalai, the BJP leader in Tamil Nadu, called for action against Vikatan. The reason was a picture in one of their magazines showing Prime Minister Modi with his hands chained while sitting across from former US President Trump.
The cartoon pointed out that Modi didn’t speak up about US authorities handcuffing people sent back to India during his meeting with Trump.
Some people in India and other countries could still access the website on certain browsers and phones, but BJP leaders posted pictures showing that others couldn’t get in.
With the confusion about the ban, Vikatan issued a statement late Saturday night saying it has always supported freedom of expression for the past 100 years.
The statement said, "We have always believed in supporting free speech and will continue to do so. We are still trying to understand why our website was blocked and are working to address the issue with the ministry."
