Voters in Gadchiroli Stand Together for Alcohol-Free Elections
Vidarbha, Gadchiroli, India: 1,07,90 voters from 197 villages have pledged to avoid alcohol during the Assembly elections to promote transparency and fairness. These villages, with the support of Muktipath Village Associations, Shaktipath Associations, and Ward Associations, have passed resolutions to create an alcohol-free environment for the elections across the district.
Through the Muktipath-Shaktipath Village Association, villagers from 197 villages were persuaded to adopt the idea of alcohol-free elections. The reasoning provided was that voting with a clear mind enables the selection of the right candidate, while enforcing alcohol prohibition strengthens its practice within the village. Additionally, they were informed that this would ensure a peaceful and conflict-free polling process. Convinced by this argument, the villagers collectively passed resolutions in support of the initiative.
Efforts are underway to raise awareness about the benefits of alcohol-free elections. Banners and posters promoting alcohol-free voting are being displayed throughout the district. The villagers expect that the candidates they vote for will also support a liquor ban at both the village and district levels.
Candidates should not be drinkers themselves, and if alcohol is not distributed before or on election day, the process will remain peaceful. The resolutions stated, "We will not vote for anyone who distributes alcohol." It was also emphasized that voters should avoid electing unfit candidates by ensuring their decisions are made free from the influence of alcohol.
A total of 197 villages have passed resolutions supporting alcohol-free elections, with 10,790 signatures. The breakdown of participating villages is as follows: Wadsa (15), Armori (17), Kurkheda (12), Korchi (15), Dhanora (19), Gadchiroli (19), Chamorshi (23), Mulchera (20), Etapalli (18), Bhamragarh (2), Aheri (10), and Sironcha (27). These resolutions were supported by the Muktipath Village Association, Shaktipath Association, and Ward Associations.
The villagers have also resolved that they will neither accept nor consume alcohol, ensuring they cast their votes with full awareness. This commitment will help maintain an alcohol-free and peaceful voting process.
