Wadi Flyover to Open Soon, RTO Flyover Completion Delayed by 8 Months
Nagpur, India: The Wadi flyover, part of the Rs478 crore Amravati Road Traffic Improvement Project (ARTIP), is expected to open by September 10. Meanwhile, the 2.8 km RTO flyover will likely remain under construction for over eight more months before it is ready for public use. Both flyovers are being built at a total cost of Rs318 crore, under the supervision of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
According to a Public Works Department (PWD) official, the 2.4 km long Wadi flyover, stretching from Wadi Naka to Wadi police station, is about 90 to 95 percent complete. "The main construction work is done, with all 48 segments erected. Now, only the final road finishing and mastic layering on the bridge remain. Other tasks, such as laying footpaths and installing road signs beneath the flyover, are expected to be finished by October 31," the official explained.
Construction of the Wadi flyover was delayed by high-tension 132kV wires that ran over the Wadi junction. This issue was resolved by installing three monopoles to raise the wires' height from 10.5 meters to 28 meters.
Regarding the RTO flyover, which runs from the RTO Office to just before the University Campus, the PWD official noted that additional time would be required to complete it. "About 60% of the flyover and the road beneath are finished. We anticipate the flyover will be completed by February or March next year," said the official.
A significant challenge remaining for the RTO flyover is the dismantling of two old bridges at Ravi Nagar Square and RTO Square. This work will require road closures, and the PWD is waiting for traffic department approval to set up necessary diversions. The bridge near the RTO Office will be demolished and rebuilt first, as the flyover’s structure will be anchored in the same location. "We have a 45-day deadline to reconstruct both bridges, and work will start once the rainy season ends," the official added.
The construction of both flyovers began in March 2021 with a two-year timeline, but the revised completion date is now set for February 28, 2025.
