Watch out for these routine behaviors that exacerbate inflammation

You are what you eat, so you should eat what your body needs because food is vital to life. However, as we have become more and more exposed to western food culture, our eating habits have changed, and some foods can worsen inflammation; these foods are known as pro-inflammatory foods.

1. Poor Diet- Trans fats, refined carbohydrates, and processed foods all contribute to inflammation.  Eat whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids.

2. No Physical Activity- Sedentary living makes inflammation worse.  Do moderate exercise for at least half an hour each day.

3. Chronic Stress- Stress that goes untreated for a long time raises cortisol, which exacerbates inflammation.  Try journaling, deep breathing, or meditation to deal with stress and its detrimental effects on health.

4. Lack of Sleep- Your body is not properly rested to repair and replenish energy if you don't get enough sleep. 

5. Dehydration- The elixir of life, water is essential for bodily healing.  Prolonged inflammation and a slowed metabolism are the results of depriving our bodies of water.

6. Excess of Sugar- Blood glucose is raised by sugar, which exacerbates inflammation.  A high blood sugar level also causes our bodies to heal more slowly.
