We can see optimism about Vinesh's CAS decision
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the 50kg division final at the Paris Olympics was heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday.
After winning three bouts on the first day of her event, Vinesh advanced to the final; however, the second weigh-in the next day, just before the final, revealed that she was 100 grams overweight. There was a commotion when she was subsequently ruled out of the tournament in accordance with United World Wrestling regulations.
UWW used Cuba's Guzman Lopez, whom she had defeated in the semifinals, to take Vinesh's place in the gold medal match. Along with famous sports law specialist Vidushpat Singhania, Harish Salve, a former Solicitor General of India, was representing Vinesh.
On the day of her final, Vinesh submitted an application to the CAS Ad Hoc Division at 16:45 CEST (20:15 IST). That day, the medal matches for wrestling got underway at 21:45 IST.
According to Vinesh, after she won her matches and advanced to the final on the first day, she was comfortably within the weight class. Her first-day results cannot be overturned, and she will not be placed last.
The Hon. Dr. Annabelle Bennett AC SC (AUS), sitting as a Sole Arbitrator, has been assigned the dispute, according to CAS, and she will hold a hearing with the parties on Friday.
It stated that a decision is anticipated to be made prior to the conclusion of the Olympic Games. On Sunday comes the Games' closing ceremony.
